    Abstract
    The use of tobacco leaves is generally limited to cigarettes and cigars. More than 2500 chemicals have been identified in tobacco leaves. Among the widely used compounds is nicotine, which functions as an active ingredient in treating cigarette addiction. Nicotine is also reported as an active ingredient for treating neuro-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Schizophrenia. Another component that has received much attention is solanesol, an intermediate in synthesising ubiquinone drugs such as Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamin K2. The presentation will describe several extraction methods for tobacco wastes (leaves and stems) to produce nicotine and solanesol. The separation of these materials using various solvents that have different polarities will also be discussed. Some potential utilisations will also be elaborated. Most of the results of this presentation have been published as a book chapter, journal articles and proceedings papers.
